Camp Magic is all aboutdoing what we love to do, it's about fuelling our passion to create, it's about having a whole lot of fun.
International Storyteller Katherine McLeod is opening her 10th Camp Magic program this year in late June (2009). It all started back in Canada when Katherine worked at a summer camp in Northern Ontario. She reveled at the opportunity to immerse herself into the "camp world" in her later teens, working as a group leader for school-age children. Her favourite parts of camp were all the stories, songs, performances, arts, and crafts. The heart of Camp Magic was born during these Canadian summer experiences.
After high school, Katherine decided to major in education at university whilst training in theatre on the side, merging together the two things she loved most. Upon graduating, she worked in Toronto with children, writing and directing children's plays, and running arts programs after school. |
Following these experiencesKatherine bought a one way ticket to Amsterdam, and traveled and worked in Europe, Asia, and Australia. It was through this steady engagement with different people in different cultures and countries, all telling their stories, that propelled Katherine into her very earliest passion, storytelling.
For the past 11 years she has lived in Singapore. Here Katherine returned to playwriting for children and teaching drama. She also returned to the stage in adult roles, but increasingly turned to solo storytelling performances for all ages. At the same time Katherine started facilitating hand-drumming circles, and using the drums in her shows.
When she started Camp Magic it was this blend of story, theatre, and rhythm that was at the very core of the program. The combination of this with her experiences at camp in Northern Canada all those years ago is the root of what we see today in a multi-sensory, multi-dimensional program known as Camp Magic! |
Camp Magic is a constant collaboration of the creating that Katherine continues to do every year. She hires a team of incredible individuals who bring forth their talents and warm personalities to ignite the annual themes. It is their unique strengths and caring attitudes that bring the whole picture into play.
And so begins another holiday, another program, and another labour of absolute love.
